Expertise: Financial Management and Sustainability
Jonathan Blum leads Blum Consulting Solutions, a consultancy advising nonprofit organizations on improving their financial management and on building long-term financial sustainability. In his work with clients, he focuses on financial management and coaching, including accounting system review, financial reporting, program evaluation, and budget development. Services also include developing policies and procedures, audit preparation, fundraising operations, and grant management and reporting.
Jonathan has extensive experience working with nonprofit organizations and agencies. His current work has included acting as the part-time finance director of a nonprofit serving veterans, as a consultant for a literacy organization, a financial coach for an arts organization, and as the interim finance manager of a nonprofit providing equine assisted mental health therapy.
Prior to founding Blum Consulting Solutions, he served as the chief financial officer of the Durham Housing Authority. He also served as the finance director of a community-based health care provider funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, and a nonprofit providing wellness services to seniors. Jonathan also served as the acting president of a nonprofit organization assisting artists and artisans, and helped guide the organization through an extensive restructuring. Earlier, he guided the start-up of a nonprofit organization whose mission is assist wounded service members.
Prior to moving to the nonprofit sector, Jonathan’s experience included positions as a management consultant, banker, and trust officer. As a senior manager at Ernst & Young, a national consulting and auditing firm, he directed numerous consulting engagements focusing on operational improvement and business planning. During his years as an investment banker and commercial banker, he managed loan facilities and private equity investments. As a trust officer, he advised clients on trust and estate planning strategies, including charitable remainder trusts.
Jonathan has an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA from Tufts University. His professional affiliations include the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Financial Executives Networking Group. He has also presented at the annual conference of the Small Business Center at the Blue Ridge Community College.
